Description

The Sahlgrenska Academy is the faculty of health sciences at the University of Gothenburg. Education and research are conducted within the fields of pharmacy, medicine, odontology and health care sciences. Child health has been identified as a strong research area at Sahlgrenska Academy. The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology is one of six institutes within the Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg. The institute is directly adjacent to Experimental Biomedicine (EBM) which is the major animal facility in Gothenburg. The organisation also contains core facilities, iincluding Bioinformatics, Centre for Cellular Imaging, Centre for Mouse Physiology, Genomics, Proteomics, Electron microscopy. The Gothenburg group brings longstanding experience and comprehensive expertise in animal-model-based neuroscience and a clinical centre for possible translational studies.

Carina Mallard has more than 20 years experience in both large fetal sheep and rodent animal models of perinatal brain injury. She will offer models of neonatal rat and mouse hypoxia-ischemia and LPS inflammatory brain injury. The group has access to a number of transgenic mice that will be used to examine the integrity of the BBB.

Karin Sävman is a neonatologist at tertiary clinical centre, specializing in identification of injury markers in newborn CSF and blood and long term neurological follow up in children. The neonatology group of Karin Sävman will offer the clinical framework into which the results of the studies performed within NEUROBID will be directly disseminated to this clinical group.

Henrik Hagberg is a world leading expert on experimental brain injury research. He will have an advisory role in this project.
